Hickory Veterinary Hospital was established in February 1980, when Jon and Jean entered into a lease with option to purchase, with Ralph and Shirley Klein. At that time, the only building on the property was the original farmhouse building.

In 1982, Jon and Jean decided to purchase the property and renovate the old farmhouse building. The kennel was added to the hospital building in 1983, and consisted of about 20 runs and 35 cages. The practice initially treated anything other than birds and reptiles, and gradually transitioned into a small animal practice in the late 1980’s into the early 1990’s. In the mid 80’s, John and Jean added the feed store to the complex, which started out as a trailer that only sold food and cages.

In 1991, they began to build the feed store building (presently the hospital building), which became a large warehouse style building, and incorporated the addition of the grooming salon to the Hickory Complex. The large kennel was built in 1995, which included over 100 runs, a cat ward, and a large fenced grass yard, as well as the grooming salon, Vanity Fur Pet Grooming.

In 2008 the Practice was then purchased by Dr.Robert Silcox and Dr.Claire McNesby (current owner/operators). In 2009, they renovated the feed store, and converted it into a brand new veterinary hospital. They then converted the old kennel into a new feed store. Dr.Silcox and Dr.McNesby have continued to grow the practice tremendously and have carried on the Hickory reputation and dedication to providing top notch veterinary care and best medicine.
