What are ancient grains and how are they different than 'traditional' grains?

Defined simply, ancient grains are grains (and certain seeds) that have been largely unchanged over the last thousand years.

This is different from mass produced grains like corn, wheat, and rice that have been selectively bred, may have undergone genetic modification, have a higher potential exposure to pesticides, or have been affected by other modern agricultural practices.

Common ancient grains include, millet, quinoa, barley, spelt, and sorghum. Certain heirloom varieties of traditional grains like rice are also sometimes included in this category.

In addition to their lack of modern alterations, ancient grains offer several health benefits to pets. They’re rich in fiber, protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. They can help your dog or cat maintain steady blood sugar levels. Many ancient grains contain antioxidants and omega fatty acids, and some are gluten free.

With all these benefits, ancient grains are a healthy inclusion in Fromm recipes.
