Dog Food Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ

1 What is the difference between your dry product lines for dogs?
We currently have 3 product lines for dogs: Fromm Family Classics, Gold Nutritionals®, and Four-Star Nutritionals®. All of our dry products for dogs utilize top quality human-grade USDA inspected ingredients with added vitamins and minerals.
  1. Our Fromm Family Classics line is primarily formulated with fresh chicken and includes products designed for adult dogs, senior dogs, and dogs looking to lose weight.
  2. Our Gold Nutritionals® line is formulated with multiple fresh protein sources including fresh duck, fresh chicken, fish, and fresh lamb. Aside from adult and senior/weight loss formulas our Gold Nutritionals® line also has 2 puppy formulas; Puppy Gold and Large Breed Puppy Gold.
  3. Four-Star Nutritionals® is all about variety. Each recipe is formulated for all life stages and is suitable for puppies, adults, and senior dogs. Because each recipe has a similar blend of fresh fruits, vegetables, brown rice, and potatoes it is encouraged to switch between each variety monthly, weekly, or even daily.

2 Do you have a holistic dog food / Are your dog foods holistic?
Yes, all of our dog and cat foods are considered holistic. This includes our Fromm Family Classics, Gold Nutritionals®, and Four-Star Nutritionals® product lines. Holistic dog foods are typically all-natural dog foods that contain no fillers utilizing only ingredients which serve a specific nutritional purpose. A lot of holistic dog foods omit common allergens like wheat and corn. All of our balanced diets (canned & dry) fit this definition in its entirety.

3 How do you recommend switching dog food to Fromm from another brand?
If possible switch the food gradually, over a period of a week or so. Start with a mixture of 25% Fromm and 75% of your old food and feed that for two or three days, then step it up to 50%-50%, and finally end up with a combo of 75% Fromm, 25% old food. If you don't detect any changes in your dog’s digestion over the week's time, you can start feeding Fromm exclusively. – If you cannot switch the food gradually it is OK to start feeding Fromm exclusively, but allow a short period of time for your dog to become acclimated to the new food. If your dog has a sensitive stomach/stomach irritability it is recommended to switch over a longer period of time (2-4 weeks.)

7 My dog has sensitive skin, which food do you recommend?
Dogs with sensitive skin need a high quality, meat-based diet rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins. An optimal level of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids nourish your dog's skin and help promote a healthy, shiny coat. We recommend any recipe from Fromm Family Classics, Gold Nutritionals®, or Four-Star Nutritionals® for dogs with sensitive skin. 8 Which food is best for my puppy?
Puppies need higher levels of nutrients that are not normally prevalent in regular commercial dog foods. We have designed two formulas in our Gold Nutritionals® line especially for puppies: Puppy Gold and Large Breed Puppy Gold (designed for puppies of breeds with adult weights greater than 50 pounds.) We also recommend feeding any one of our Four-Star Nutritionals® recipes. Like our Gold Nutritionals® puppy recipes, all of our Four-Star Nutritionals® recipes are enriched with the fat soluble and water soluble vitamins, minerals, fats, and other essentials your growing puppy needs. Salmon À La Veg is especially popular among breeders due to its small kibble size (about the size of a pencil eraser.)

11 Why is there chicken cartilage in your single source meat/fish protein foods?
Natural chicken cartilage contains the highest levels of unprocessed chondroitin and glucosamine which helps to develop, maintain and repair your dogs joints. In relation to the other ingredients the amount of actual chicken cartilage is very little and is not likely to promote an allergic reaction in dogs allergic to chicken protein. If your dog has chronic allergies please consult with your vet first.

12 Why are there bones in your canned Chicken Thighs for dogs? Are they safe for my dog?
Yes the bones are soft and completely safe to be fully consumed by dogs of all sizes. We use a proprietary method to ensure every bone in every can is cooked to be soft. The process used is similar to a pressure cooker to ensure the soft pliability of the bone. We encourage you to place the bone between your forefingers and squeeze gently to see exactly how soft the bones are. The bones found in our Chicken Thighs for dogs are highly nutritious and contain bone marrow and cartilage which are extremely beneficial for overall joint health.

13 Do you use menadione sodium bisulfate (a source of Vitamin K activity) in any of your dog foods?
No we do not use menadione sodium bisulfate in any of our products. We eliminated the use of menadione sodium bisulfate in the winter of 2005. If you currently have a bag with menadione sodium bisulfate listed in the ingredients with a best before date after December 2006 it does not contain menadione sodium bisulfate, we are currently using up an existing stock of old bags.

14 Do you use wheat gluten, rice gluten or rice protein concentrates in any of your dog foods?
No, we do not use wheat gluten, rice gluten or rice protein concentrates in any of our products, including our canned foods. Wheat gluten is frequently used by other companies in their canned pet food to make a manufactured meat substitute product that can be made to look like chunks and slices or dices of real meat from lower quality meats or inedible (not fit for human consumption) meat by-products. If you see a rubbery chunk of meat in any canned pet food it is likely to be a piece of reformed meat made with wheat gluten. Rest assured, when you open one of our cans, you will only see real cuts of whole meat and vegetables.
